Cowboys Begin Final 2013 Season Ahead of the Herd

It would seem that the Canadian Cowboys want to enter the 2014 year having made a name for themselves. After a July Elite League Title win - the ice in the Saddledome a portrait of their recent victory - the Cowboys went into the final 2013 season ready to finish the year with gusto. After their first few games of back and forth hockey, the boys decided it was time to make their country proud. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Six wins in a row. Seven. Eight. Nine. Nine in a row - the Cowboys seemed unstoppable. And for a while longer they were. Sixteen games later, the Cowboys were finally delivered their 3rd loss of the August 2013 season. Each member of the team played a pivotal role in these consecutive victories - each member except for their veteran right defenseman Jacques Bonjour (Montreal, QC). Unfortunately, Jacques has been on a leave of absence for a family emergency - his last known location was at "Pas D'internet" general hospital in Montreal.

"We obviously have high hopes that [Bonjour] will make a return for the onset of the 2014 year. It's been good to see some of the other guys step up defensively to take his place, though" commented the Canadian Cowboy coach. "We're definitely excited to have him back."

Cowboys Squirt their way to Elite League Title

"Squirt, Squirt, Squirt, Squirt. Cow-boy-Squirt, Playoff-Champ-Squirt!"

In the closing months of the NHL 2013 year, the Canadian Cowboys were able to assemble what would be a dream-team-esque lineup to defeat 4 opponents en-route to becoming the July 2013 Elite League Champions.

In the dying hour of the July 2013 regular season, Zack Smith (Oakville, ON.) and Jacques Bonjour (Quebec, ON.) were able to squeak into Elite League Playoff Contension, setting the stage for a grand finale of epic proportions.

With Zack Smith (8G, 0A) winning an average of 84% of the draws, and participating in 8 of the eventual 13 Cowboy goals, the Canadian Cowboy offense was a force to be reckoned with. But Smith was not alone in his offensive forays, as left winger and long standing Captain Charlie Little (2G, 4A) and Toughguy-Turned-Turbo Calvin Cooke (2G, 8A) put up tally after tally in the assist column to add to the ambush that would be their second appearance and subsequent upheaval of the EASHL Elite League.

The Cowboys were privy to a much earned home ice advantage for game 1.

Early in the first period, the Cowboys mounted their steeds and were on full attack. An unfortunate interference penalty taken by RW Froggy Fresh (Victorica, BC) haulted the Cowboys attack. Having been on their heels for 2:00, the steeds were itching to get back at it, and with 1:15 remaining in the first period of playoff hockey, the Cowboys were on the board. Zack Smith fired up his offensive guns, netting his first of the night with an incredible passing play set-up by Michael the Magic (Georgetown, ON.) and Froggy Fresh. The second period went scoreless thanks to incredible defensive play by Bumbai the Defender (Burlington, ON.) and Jacques Bonjour, holding the opponents to 2 shots. Unufortunately, midway through the third, the opposition were able to sneak between the all-star defensive pairing for a breakaway goal. With 6:00 remaining in the game, the Cowboys were all tied up.

The opponents were all too excited about their ability to tie the game, and took two subsequent slashing penalties against Michael the Magic while he performed some of his signature dance moves up the left wing boards. The Cowboys wouldn't let this opportunity pass them by, and netted a 5-on-3 goal with only 2 minutes remaining in the third. Zack Smith put up his second of the night, as he escaped several hits coming out of the corner deep in the offensive zone. The Cowboy fans were ecstatic, as their boys were heading out on the road for game number two of the Elite League Playoffs.

Maybe it was the intensity of their game 1 win. Maybe it was the pressure of being on the road. Or maybe, the Cowboys were becoming one of the hottest teams in the July 2013 playoffs faster than anyone knew. Regardless, it was an unfortunate evening for their opposition. Zack Smith put up the first Cowboy goal, which was the early beginning to the end for the opponents. Froggy Fresh was able to capitalize on their frustrations, netting the 2nd of four goals on the evening. The following two would come as a result of seemingly ridiculous goaltending choices on behalf of Bob Kostitsyn.

"I just thought I could pass it out to my defense and get a rush started. These guys are just...they were too good. And I'm an idiot" said the opposing goaltender. "They're too strong in every category. We didn't even score."

The Cowboys galloped home for game 3, where their opponents must have been certainly fearful coming into the SaddleDome against the red-hot Cowboys. Having come off a 4-0 win on the road, the Cowboys hoped to continue their shut-down defense - and they would. The first period was relatively back and forth; despite having out shot their opponents 10-1, the first period was scoreless.

"We went into the dressing room thinking we could come back strong. We had the zone, we had the heart, and we had the burn. We weren't about to drop it in game 3" said Captain Michael the Magic when asked about the game 3 scoreless period. "It was uncharacteristic given our previous two games but we were just feeling them out."

And feel them out they did. The Cowboys defense was unstoppable, holding the opponents to a mere 3 SOG for the rest of the game. Bumbai and Bonjour both tallied assists on 2 goals in the Cowboys eventual 2-0 win, and second consecutive shutout. The Cowboys were on their way to the Finals.

The final game was being played in the comfort of their own homes, which is exactly what the Cowboys wanted. Fans screaming, towels waving, hearts beating - they were ready to take it all.

The game began as an intense back and forth battle, but the Cowboys would draw first blood. Again, the pressure of the Cowboys led the opposing goaltender to make a poor choice, passing the puck right out to Michael the Magic's tape, leaving him a wide open net that he wasn't about to miss in game 4. 1-0 Cowboys. The first period ended with the Cowboys up and the opponents scoreless - a familiar theme.

"We just kept the puck moving up ice - we tried not to pass too much between us, Bonjour and I, until we were on offense. Smart pokes, smart passes, and a full team effort" commented Bumbai the Defender, speaking on behalf of himself and his All-Star defensive partner Jacques Bonjour who was unable to comment at the time, having no interpreter present.

An unfortunate second period goal by the opponents would snap the Cowboy shutout at 155:00 minutes, but this only served to lite the fire that it would take to seal the deal. The Cowboys would answer with 1...2...3....4. Four consecutive tallies, led by Froggy Fresh and Zack Smith, netting two each, to cap off the July 2013 Elite League Playoffs with a dark brown Cowboy hat.

"We were hoping to have the banner up in the arena for the final month of the 2013 year, and we did it. Our next goal is to do it again next month, and head into 2014 with an incredible record behind us. Each player proved that they had what it takes to get to the top, and I can't wait to see what the boys can do moving forward. YEEHAW" said Captain Little.

Regular season play commences Thursday night, for the final season of the 2013 year.

COMEBACK KIDS: Cowboys Horn Rhinos for 5-4 OT Victory

The game began like most others for the Cowboys - focused defensive play, aggressive offensive attack, and excellent reads. However this time the Cowboys were in a slightly different position. They would be starting their backup goaltender Zachary Smith (Oakville, ON), and were simultaneously missing their All-Star centreman, Friendship Casserole.

Without Casserole taking the draws, the Cowboys were forced to play a lot of time in their own end, allowing nearly 20 shots on Smith in the first 20 minutes. This would lead to an early 3-0 deficit - a lead the Cowboys would quickly find discouraging.

However, during the final minutes of the second, the opposing Rhino's centerman mistakenly won a faceoff into their own net, igniting the fire within the comeback kids. The Rhinos would take a 4-1 lead into the dressing room, however, it was a lead they would not soon forget.

A quick third period goal by Drew Perryman (Halifax, NS) brought the Cowboys to within two. Moments later, Perryman would net another, closing the Rhinos stampede to 1 precious goal. In the final 0:29 of the third period, grinder Calvin Cooke (Victoria, BC) would poke the tying goal home, lighting a fire in the belly of their steeds - a burn they would carry into overtime to seal the deal just before heading to the second overtime period.

"We just kept grinding - we knew they had them on their heals for the majority of the game" said Captain Michael the Magic (Georgetown, ON). "I know Zacky gave it his best back there, but it's a tough game to play, the full 60 between the posts. He gave it his all and made some really big saves to carry us through."

The Cowboys would carry this momentum through 3 consecutive victories, which consequently brought them into the Elite League competition with only a couple of weeks remaining in the July 2013 season.

JULY 2013: A ROCKY START?

After an unsuccessful June 2013 Pro Playoff run, the Canadian Cowboys began the July season with confidence and vigor. Sadly, their attempts fell short early on. The Cowboys started their July 2013 season with an abismal 6-12-2 record. When asked what critical shortcomings the Cowboys would have to overcome in the latter half of the month, head coach said
"These are still the Cowboys we know to be able to conquer their division. A rocky start gives these guys the fuel they need to move forward and improve on their games, both as individuals and as a member of the club at large."
It would seem that these words of July 6 had some weight on the Cowboys collective conscience. From their 6-12-2 record, the Cowboys have thus far improved to 26-18-6 midway through the July season. The Cowboys are ranked 110th in the Pro league today, however a few wins in the coming weeks will surely help the Cowboys to achieve the Elite League finish they hoped for last month, giving them a shot at the elite title in the closing months of the 2013 EASHL year.
Can the Canadian Cowboys finish the July 2013 season as Elite competitors? With two weeks remaining in the season, the boys have a lot of time to do just that. The Cowboys face their next opponents Friday night. The puck drops at 11:00 EST.

PRO LEAGUE PLAYOFF RUN - JUNE 2013

You can’t talk about the Canadian Cowboys’ June 2013 Pro-Championship Cup run without using one key word, and that key word is “Bumbai.” In 4 games, the Cowboys scored a total of 10 goals, of which Chunkai Bumbai (Burlington, ON) involved himself in 9.

In game 1, the Cowboys found themselves warming up on the road, where Johan Jokinen (Oslow, Norway) buried his first goal of the playoffs to give the boys an early 1-0 lead. This goal, combined with the defensive offense of Fix It Felix Jr. (Georgetown, ON) and the skilled poke checks of recently re-signed RD Jacques Bonjour (Burlington, ON) was able to give the Cowboys their first win of the June playoffs. They would take this win back to the Saddledome for game 2 of their valiant cup run.

Game 2’s opponents presented the Cowboys with a considerable challenge. Outstanding goaltending between the Cowboy pipes by Rob Johnson (Toronto, ON) kept Canada in the game early. Late in the third period, Jacques Bonjour fed a zipline pass through the slot to Bumbai, who bent the twine on the far side to take a 1-0 lead. The second period brought the Cowboys then 99:00 minute shut-out streak to an end, with 0:01 remaining.

“We just had to focus” said Captain Fix It Felix Jr.

These inspiring words had a clear effect on their star forward. Just 5:00 into the second, Bumbai was able to light the lamp again with an interception in the high slot to take a 2-1 lead. Midway through the third, Felix was able to bring the puck deep into the opposition zone, dancing around the opponents with his signature spin-o-rama and ripping the rubber past the opposing goaltender to bury what would be the game winner. A late third period goal by the away team would not be enough to continue their playoff run.

The Canadian Cowboys were able to enjoy a small rest between game 2 and game 3, as their opponents showed up quite late to the game. Assuming the tardiness was a result of the quickly spreading lore that told of Bumbai’s infinite puck-wisdom, the Cowboys were relentless. The scoreboard after period 1 would read 3-0, with 3 points for Legendary Bumbai, 3 points for Dynamite D-man Jacques Bonjour, and 3 points for Class Act Captain Felix. Period 2 brought similar misfortune to the opposition, resulting in 2 more beautifully planned goals by Bumbai. The hattrick by Bumbai confirmed the myth that the Cowboys were an unstoppable force, and just as mysteriously as the opposition tardily came, they were gone after only 2 periods of play.

“We just thought of all those times that we played teams who walked all over us. We thought of how relentless they were, and just didn’t back down. I guess they couldn’t handle it” Felix told reporters.

The cowboys were back on their steeds and out of the steeples for the final game of their thus-far triumphant Pro Cup run. Allowing only 2 goals in 3 games, the Cowboys felt unstoppable.

“Nous sommes les meilleurs” chanted Bonjour from the dressing room. “Nous sommes meilleur de l’autre equipe, et nous serons les champions de ce mois!” Mr. Bonjour’s agent and translator revealed to reporters that he was excited to become the champions. [“We are the best. We are better than the other team, and we will be the champions this month”].

Unfortunately, the French defenseman would be disappointed. A scoreless first period foretold of the lack of offensive pressure demonstrated by the worn out Cowboys. EHH was able to take a 1-0 lead early in the second period. An excellent pass to Jacques Bonjour from Chunkai Bumbai would result in a tie game late in the same period, however the opponents would jump to an immediate 2-1 lead in the third period; a lead even the most legendary forward was unable to overcome.

“We had a lot of fun out there. We played well, and that’s what matters” choked Bumbai through modest tears of crushing defeat.

“Goodnight boys. Good games” ended Captain Felix.

The Cowboys hope to finish the July season hotter than the days are long, and look to capitalize on a chance at the Elite league title as their second-last playoff appearance. July action begins Tuesday evening.

Longest Canadian Cowboy game ever played

It was a long, long, long evening for the likes of Austin (Lerkstoff) and Charlie (xXI CR1SIS IXx). After all other Cowboys had fallen fast asleep and the world seemed quiet, these two young men decided to embark on a mission. A mission to win a Cowboy game on THC turf. Before the game, the two followed their usual routine and acted as if they were about to step onto the ice for yet another normal EASHL game. Little did they know they were about to create history. Shot after shot, hit after hit, the game went on. Both goalies acted as if they were in brick wall mode like the days of Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. Nothing could be put past these 2 remarkable goalies. 0-0 was the score on the board after 1 period, then 2 periods of scoreless hockey, then 3...4...5...6...7.8.9.... 9 periods of scoreless hockey. A feat that should never be attempted by any man. Both Charlie (Georgetown, Ont) and Austin (Hamilton, Ont) felt the weight of this long game on their shoulders. Their eyes were bloodshot, thumbs were sore and with the short breaks in between periods, both had full bladders. Finally with a minute and 24 seconds remaining in the 6th overtime period, the game ended in a tremendous Cowboy victory. I Choose You Squirtle found a way to slip it past the goalie which had the few fans remaining in the arena, look at their watches, and question why they wasted so much of their life to witness their team be shutout for 9 consecutive periods. This game will forever be remembered in the history books and hopefully this record will never be broken. Congratulations Austin and Charlie for pulling off such a remarkable yet ridiculous feat.

PRO LEAGUE PLAYOFF RUN - MAY 2013

In the May 2013 EASHL Playoffs, the Canadian Cowboys were a household name. There wasn’t a bar in all of Canada that didn’t tune in to watch the boys try to bring home the cup. Despite being confronted with obstacle after discouraging obstacle, the Cowboys were able to overcome xXAdversityXx and shut down the opposition at almost every turn. Game 1 presented a plague of injuries, including veteran centerman Friendship Casserole, and a game-misconduct to Left-Defenseman Delicious Spice Rum. Furthermore, RW Chunkai Bumbai was called off the ice for a medical emergency. If that weren’t enough, the Cowboys were forced to kill off a staggering 23:00 in penalties toward their gallant 1-0 victory in game 1. Game 2 presented similar atrocities to the #peskycowboys, when Right Defenseman Jacques Bonjour (suffering a week-long throat-infection, preventing his ability to communicate with the team) mysteriously vanished from the game with no explanation. The Cowboys were able to hold onto their 1-0 lead until there remained only 0:31 in their stretch to a 1-0 game 2 victory, at which point the opposing PWNHAWKS were able to sneak one past the weakened defensive pairing. This game would be sent to overtime, where the PWNHAWKS were able to bury the Cowboys in game 2, ending their foray towards the championship.

“I want to throw up” said RW Bumbai when asked how he felt about the loss.
We spoke to captain Michael the Magic. “That was really sad for Jacques. To have to watch from the bench like that. We gave it what we could, but the Hawks were able to capitalize on our weaknesses.”

“Je pense que je suis un peu triste pour cette jeu. Je n’ete pas dans la majorite de la jeu, mais j’adore l’effort par l’equipe. J’adore les cowboys” wrote Jacques Bonjour (200 Career Assists).

The cowboys, despite having been defeated in the May2013 Pro playoffs, look ahead to June, where a month of hard effort promises a shot at the Elite Title. Regular season play resumes next week.

INSPIRATIONAL WORDS - FEBRUARY 13, 2013

“There’s no secret, it’s going out there and playing for the group. We got too many guys lookin’ at the stat sheet and wondering how many goal, and assists, and…cookies they got rather then taking a hit to make a play and getting run over so we can get a puck out so that your teammate can maybe have a three-on-two, or…so you can block a shot and kill a penalty when we really need it so we can stay in a game.
We just don’t have that desperation, that accountability, that responsibility to each other.

Look at that team we played tonight, they all have that. They’re guys that are willing to get run over for the guy sitting next to them. I said it after the playoffs and it still rings true. We need all 20 guys to have that mentality, that ‘I’m willing to sacrifice my body and the stat sheet so that we can be successful,’ all 20 guys need to be willing to do that every single night, or else, we’re going to have too many interviews like this.”

- David Backes , Captain of the St. Louis Blues

Captain Reaches Legend 3 Status with A+ Rating - NOVEMBER 2012

The usually very modest Captain of the Canadian Cowboys had a great welcoming to Legend 3 status. With the big 350th game played in his NHL 13 career he conquered this milestone with an overall rating of an A+. This was the peak of this young Cowboys rating but it was a legendary way to be an A+. Charlie Bucket hopes to reach this status again when he reaches Legend 3 in NHL 14.

GLOBAL SEVENTY-FOUR - OCTOBER 2, 2012

On this day in history, the Canadian Cowboys were able to revel in the glory that was, and still remains, their best ranking in the EASHL. The Cowboys were able to dominate 14/15 of their first opponents in the opening days of the October 2012 season, earning them a spot in the top 100 teams globally.

DUSTY'S RETIREMENT - SEPTEMBER 11, 2012

Dusty Skater has officially retired after 3 seasons in the EASHL. This decision was made early Tuesday morning. NHL 13's new initiative to crack down on players with "profane names" has something to do with this, says Zachary Smith, Dusty Skater's agent. Insiders and hockey analysts are predicting Dusty will more than likely come back with a new identity. No comment has been made by EA Sports or the EASHL about why the name Dusty Skater is now considered a "profane name".
